When this butterfly lands and closes its wings, you might do a double take. Because on its underwings is a perfectly shaped black and white number 88. And no, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you.
What’s the 88 Butterfly?
Found in Central and South America (and sometimes drifting into Mexico), the 88 butterfly (Diaethria spp.) is a small, brush-footed butterfly famous for the bold figure-eight pattern on the underside of its wings. There are several species in the group, often called “number butterflies.”
Fun Fact: There’s an 89, too!
Some individuals show a slightly off-center swirl that looks more like an 89 or even a double 8. Surely nature’s typography at its finest!
Where to Spot Them
They love tropical forests, especially near rivers and trails. You can find them sipping moisture from mud, rotting fruit, or even sweaty clothes and backpack straps. They’re not shy!
Why They’re Cool
The 88 isn’t just fun to look at. It may distract predators or help the butterfly blend in with dappled light and shadows. Plus, let’s be real… they’re ridiculously photogenic.
