Deaths Head Hawk Moth

Regular price $155.00

Acherontia atropos, also known as the African death's-head hawkmoth, is one of three species in the Acherontia genus (the other two being Acherontia lachesis and Acherontia styx). Its distinguishing feature is the skull-like pattern on its thorax, which inspired both its common and scientific names. This species is abundant in southern Europe and throughout Africa, where it is considered a native species. Despite superstitions surrounding this moth, it poses little threat and only causes minor disruptions to beehives and crops. The background photo was taken by Beth Watson at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. This specimen is preserved in a compact 6"x6" frame.
