Acherontia atropos, also known as the African death's-head hawkmoth, is one of three species in the Acherontia genus (the other two being Acherontia lachesis and Acherontia styx). Its most distinguishable characteristic is the skull-like pattern on its thorax, which has influenced its common and scientific names. This species is abundant in southern Europe and throughout Africa, where it is considered a native species. Despite its cultural superstitions, this moth poses minimal danger and only causes minor disruptions to beehives and crops. The accompanying photo, taken by Beth Watson at San Roch Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana, showcases the specimen preserved in a convenient 6"x6" frame.
