Pharaoh Cicada, also known as Magicicada septendecim, is a North American species of periodical cicada with a unique 17-year life cycle. As nymphs, they spend most of their lives underground, feeding on root fluids. Once they reach their 17th year, they emerge in large numbers to molt into adults, mate, and eventually die. This synchronized emergence overwhelms predators and ensures the species' survival. During their brief above-ground period in late spring and early summer, the adults are recognized for their distinct and loud mating calls. Encased in a 5” x 5” frame, this specimen is a fascinating example to study.
