Priam’s Birdwing
Regular price $400.00
Originally collected and pinned in 1976, this breathtaking "vintage" specimen of Ornithoptera priamus poseidon exudes luxury and exclusivity. Its emerald-green and black wings shimmer with iridescence, while females, adorned with cream and yellow markings, are larger and equally stunning. Found in the rainforests of northern Australia and New Guinea and belonging to the prestigious Papilionidae family, these dazzling birdwing butterflies are famous for their size and jewel-like colors. Males, especially striking, are sought after by predators, but their caterpillars, which feed on the toxic Aristolochia plant, make them an unappetizing catch. To satisfy their exquisite taste, birdwings visit a variety of flowers for nectar, adding to their allure. Acquired from a private collection, this "antique" specimen has been expertly repinned and mounted in 2025, ensuring its timeless elegance.
