The spicebush swallowtail (Papilio troilus) is a widely-distributed black swallowtail butterfly native to North America. Its life cycle is fascinating, involving intricate camouflage and mimicry, and takes approximately one month to complete. The adult butterfly boasts a dark brown coloration and resembles toxic Pipevine swallowtails as a protective measure against predators. The larvae have a snake-like appearance, with two large eyespots and a body that resembles bird droppings. This particular specimen is encased in a 5” x 5” frame for display.
